Automated Volatile Collection Systems (AVCS) overview: |
ARS inc, is the first and only company solely dedicated to manufacturing equipment used for the collection of semiochemicals and other volatile organic compounds.
ARS’s Automated Volatile Collection Systems (AVCS) are computerized, pneumatic sampling systems that are specially designed to perform unattended multiple collections of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) samples for use in chemical analysis. VOC’s are collected on a Volatile Collector Trap (VCT) which is placed into a Volatile Collection Chamber (VCC) and then connected to the AVCS via vacuum tubing. At a user specified date and time, the AVCS will begin drawing air from the chamber through a VCT at a constant flow-rate (user selected), for a pre-determined time period (user-specified) to sample a fixed volume of air from the VCC. At the end of the collection, the user must liquid extract or thermally desorb the VOC’s for analysis, typically by GC or GC/MS. Unattended continuous VOC collections for a 24 hour or longer period are accomplished by placing multiple VCT’s in a single chamber, and having the AVCS automatically switch from VCT- to- VCT, collecting from one VCT at-a-time, using a user-specified, pre-programmed time method to control the collections.

ARS is proud to introduce our newest 4th generation Automated Volatile Collection System (AVCS) using the latest controllers to provide expanded features for lower prices over our previous collection systems.
Our newest AVCS’s are now built around the PC104 Industry Standard Pentium-class Single Board Computer (SBC) with OPTO22 Digital I/O interfaces for control of the system, replacing our previous GE FANUC Series 90.30 Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). This SBC uses all digital solid-state memory storage and has full real-time program recovery after power failures. The controller now comes standard with Ethernet communications and for the first time, allows for multiple networked AVCS systems and communicates by TCP/IP 10/100BaseT Ethernet protocol. All hardware is industrial-quality designed for continuous 24 hour-a-day 365-day operation. All hardware is modular in design with off-the-shelf plug-in components that are easily replaced as well as upgraded. (Please Note: All of our previous generation PLC-based AVCS systems are fully supported, and can be upgraded using the PLC-based hardware or replaced with the newer SBC-hardware).
All AVCS-SBC units come fully assembled in a single 15" x 21" x 15", all steel, black powder-coated chassis which contains all the AVCS hardware and controllers. Having standardized on a modular design , for both our standard and custom configured AVCS’s , allows us to assemble every system around common, interchangeable components. Each system is easily modifiable or upgrade-able to the maximum configuration of 48 sampling ports per unit in a variety of configurations (SEE NEXT PAGE).
Each AVCS-SBC system comes standard with vacuum regulation to maintain a constant sampling pressure, precision adjustable 0 to 1.3 LPM glass-tube air flow meters (Digital Mass Flow Controllers are optional - SEE BELOW) for each chamber to control VOC sampling flow rate (other ranges available at no extra cost), electronic solenoid valves, the SBC controller and solid-state switching relays, digital Vacuum Fluorescent Displays (VFD) to show the status of collection, LED status indicators of all circuits, standard CAT5 / RJ-45 10/100BaseT Ethernet network connection, and a vacuum source/pump connection port.
An optional, internal air-driven vacuum pump (with no moving parts) is available with any system for customers who do not have a separate vacuum source or pump. All AVCS-SBC systems require a single phase 120 or 220 VAC 50/60Hz electrical circuit rated for 15 Amps and either an external vacuum source capable of 25"Hg @ 4-15 LPM (depending on system size) or a compressed air source capable of delivering at least 100 psi @ 1 CFM (if using the optional internal vacuum pump).
The AVCS-SBC is user programmable for any possible collection date, time and duration of sampling by using AVCS-TESS® (Time Event Scheduling Software) for MS Windows® 95/98/2000/XP. This is a separate communications software package that is loaded onto any user provided Pentium-class PC / Notebook computer located anywhere on a common Local Area Network (LAN), and is used to initially communicate with the AVCS-SBC to set-up and download a collection (sampling) method and then log-off. The AVCS-SBC will then take-over and control the entire sampling procedure by itself.

Automated Volatile Collection Systems (AVCS) AVCS-SBC Computer Software Options & Pricing: |
The AVCS-SBC must be programmed with a collection method that includes the day/date and time, which chamber to collect from, what port on that chamber is to be used, and the duration of sampling. This programming is accomplished by using AVCS-TESS® (Time Event Scheduling Software) for MS Windows® 95/98/2000/XP.
This is a separate computer communications software package that is loaded onto any user provided Pentium-class PC or Notebook-style computer, that can be located anywhere on the same common Local Area Network (LAN) with one or more AVCS-SBC systems. TESS is only temporarily used to communicate to the AVCS-SBC system via a standard 10/100BaseT (CAT5/RJ-45) Ethernet Network connection, using TCP/IP, in order to set-up (program) a collection method on the AVCS-SBC. Once a method has been created, it is saved and then downloaded to the AVCS-SBC and then the computer can then be completely removed from the system (logged-off). It can be re-connected at any time to check the status of a collection or make changes while a run is in progress. No computer is needed to control the collection after an initial method has been set-up. The system has its own internal computer (SBC) and is stand-alone after being downloaded with a time-event program (method).
AVCS-TESS®, Time Event Scheduling Software for Microsoft Windows 95/98/2000/XP is supplied on CD-R Format (3.5"HD Floppy Disks are available if needed). This software uses standard Windows GUI style interfaces to allows a user to simply create a sampling method sequence for each sampling port with date, time and duration of collection, and save this method for repeated use. A previously ran method can be called up and adjusted for the current date or a future run date then uploaded to the AVCS-SBC to instantly program with as little as 4 mouse clicks Software requires a minimum Pentium-Class computer (Pentium I-133 MHz or faster computer w/64MB RAM) and running MS Windows 95/98/2000/XP 32-Bit Operating System (can also be a notebook style PC).
The software communicates via TCP/IP over any standard 10/100BaseT Ethernet connection between the users PC and the AVCS-SBC. The connection is through a standard Category 5 (CAT5) RJ-45 connector through a HUB/Switch or office LAN connection. Multiple AVCS-SBC Systems can be supported using either AVCS -TESS-2, -TESS-4, or -TESS-X.
AVCS-TESS comes with 1-year, free up-grades on any new versions and un-limited telephone technical support!

Software Upgrades:
All AVCS-TESS® (Time Event Scheduling Software) Products can be up-graded at any time to any other higher software product by simply paying the current difference in cost between the two products.
i.e. To up-grade from AVCS-TESS-1/48 to AVCS-TESS-2/96, the cost will be $3,550 - $2,450 = $1,100
